English – Writing

Writing Curriculum Intent

To develop independent writers across all genres and subject areas. This is achieved through our Read-Write-Perform approach which enables all children to acquire the skills required, to write confidently across the whole curriculum.

Writing

Our curriculum aims to develop independent writers, across all genres, therefore a ‘Read-Write-Perform’ approach is followed across school. ‘Read-Write-Perform’ is a journey which allows developing writers at Golborne Community Primary School to use meaningful contexts and texts to understand how we use the English language. Pupils are then taught how to apply that knowledge creatively to bring their own work to life. In some cases, particularly in Early Years and Year 1, ‘Talk for Writing’ is also used to support independent writing and internalising language structures/patterns.

The Read-Write-Perform journey follows this process:

Benchmarking – Deconstruction – Reconstruction (including Independent Writing) – Proof-Reading – Editing/Evaluating – Perform

In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, children use the ‘Read-Write-Perform’ approach to produce independent pieces of writing, across the year, in the style of a range of genres. Genres are carefully selected, progressive and sequenced across school to allow pupils to write for a range of purposes; embed their knowledge of structural and language features whilst also building upon their prior learning. Punctuation and grammar objectives are mostly taught in context and carefully connected to the genres being taught.

Pupils are assessed through Teacher Assessment against their independent writing and using Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar assessments. Spelling tests occur every Friday and include spaced retrieval practice of previously learnt rules/words.

Handwriting

Our aim is to ensure that every pupil develops a neat, fluent style of handwriting using continuous cursive letters, by the end of Year 1, as this will lead to them producing letters and words automatically in their independent writing.

Handwriting is taught daily, in Early Years and Key Stage 1, through explicit teacher modelling of letter formation and building to a cursive style. We use Letter Join script. The individual letters are taught first, with their correct sound and name, before the children apply this knowledge to cursive joins. Lead-in lines are taught once pupils are secure in the correct letter formation. We recognise that handwriting is closely linked with spelling, therefore, the practising of key word/rules and year group statutory and non-statutory words also occurs in the context of handwriting lessons, once children are competent in the correct letter formation.
