At Golborne Community Primary School, we enhance and enrich our curriculum offer with a variety of trips, experiences and visitors into school. Please see below for an overview of our termly wider curriculum trips and our Calendar of Experiences and Visitors 2024-2025.
The children in our School Nursery showed great curiosity of the world around them, exploring the colours of the leaves and the crunchy frosty grass during their nature walk. The children spoke about what they could see and even took some autumn pictures on their own.

The children had a visit from the volunteers at Greater Manchester Magistrates Association and they gave the children an insightful presentation on understanding the role of magistracy and the law.
Year 3 have had a brilliant session exploring Mount Everest through VR. The children were amazed by what they could see and also learnt some new facts.
Year 5 visited Golborne Library and had a fantastic morning taking part in a range of activities and then the children picked their own books to take back to school.
The children all took part in a whole school and then phase Rocksteady Workshops. The children had an absolutely brilliant morning with Tim, from Rocksteady, creating their very own rock band! The children really loved seeing the instruments and enjoying music together.
The whole school had a brilliant day exploring and writing poems linked to National Poetry Day. The children also enjoyed our poet visit from Steve who shared his fantastic work, which the children loved. The children also had the opportunity to buy a signed poetry booklet signed from Steve.
At the start of the term the children in Reception had a visit from a dentist and the children learnt all about brushing their teeth and how to keep their teeth and mouth healthy.
Year 5 enjoyed a trip to the Grand Theatre in Blackpool and loved watching a performance of ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’.
Key Stage 1 thoroughly enjoyed their den building experience. The chidlren worked in teams to create thier own dens and tested these to see if they had made waterproof shelters.
Reception had a fantastic trip to Acron Farm. The children pet and fed different anaimals, discussed what was needed to care for the animals and loved exploring the farm.
Lower Key Stage had a memorable day looking at what it would have been like to be a VIking. The chidlren explored a Viking battle, listened to Norse Myths and examined artefacts.
The children and staff across the school looked wonderful as they dressed up as their favourite character for World Book Day. The children also took part in a workshop delivered by Harry Heape.
The children had a wonderful visit to our local library. They completed a book trial, chose new books to read and created kind messages that they hid inside the library books for other people to find.
The children across school took part in Safer Internet Day. The children came to school wearing orange and blue linked to the logo and learnt and discussed different strategies to keep themselves safe online by keeping themsevles SMART.
The Key Stage 2 choir took part in Young Voices and represented our school brilliantly.
We had the pleasure of Mr Jack Hughes coming in to school and speaking with the children, about his career in Super League. Both staff and children thoroughly enjoyed listening to Jack’s successes and how much dedication goes into playing at the top level. It was amazing to all celebrate, another local achievement, at the highest level.
The children enjoyed a workshop linked to their wider curriculum topic, Natural Disasters. The children had fun acting out volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis.
Year 4/3 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the library in which they loved getting involved in all activities on offer and choosing their own book.
Key Stage 1 enjoyed their sessions with Sean, who shared his favourite book and brought along some characters for the children to meet. They sang a song and asked questions about being an author, whilst Sean played the guitar for the children.
As you may be aware, to celebrate ‘World Nursery Rhyme Week’, our Reception and School Nursery children performed in front of all their parents and carers. We were so incredibly proud of them. We hope everybody who came enjoyed it as much as we did. A huge well done to our School Nursery and Reception children for completing their first performance.
Reception 1 and 2, thoroughly enjoyed their first school trip at ‘The Lowry’. They explored the Julia Donaldson expedition. They even took part in the ‘Zog Academy’ class. It was great for our children to get fully immersed in all the amazing stories. We are also so proud at how well they have represented the school. What a fantastic few days this was! Well done Reception!
The author, Susan Brownrigg, visited us to share her journey to become a published author! We loved hearing about her resilience and her Gracie Fairshaw collection. This visit was even more special as it was organised by one of our Year 5 pupils who is a huge fan of Susan Brownrigg’s books.
As always, the children have been commemorating the lives of the fallen,during Remembrance Day. This year, the children have been completing an orienteering course to find out the key information of the day.
The whole school had a wonderful day celebrating Halloween. The children had a Halloween party, Halloween themed Arts and Crafts and watched a spooky film. They also looked brilliant in their costumes.
UKS2 had a wonderful time with Dr Diana (The UK’s only Maya Archaeologist). The children were able to observe real-life artefacts first-hand, and delve deeper into how we know about Maya life and how they were able to grow so successful.
To celebrate this year’s National Poetry Day, we had a visit from the local poet, Ian Bland. The children experienced listening to him perform his poems aloud and expressing their creativity during poetry workshops.

Key Stage 1 had a great day exploring Blackpool Zoo. The children learnt about different animals and how these are adapted to their environments. They also explored habitats as well and looked at the different foods the animals eat. The children also watched the sea lion session and thoroughly enjoyed this learning about the health of a sea lion, how it protects itself from predators and how they can learn new skills.
Our Reception children had a wonderful time at Kenyon Hall Farm. The children learnt about different seeds, currants, trees and vegetables linked to the food that we eat. The children planted their own bean or pea to grow at home and understood how to keep plants healthy.
Children from UKS2 enjoyed travelling back in time during their Ancient Greek workshop. They explored the theme of democracy; acted out the story of Theseus and the Minotaur and participated in their own mini Olympic games!
LKS2 had a fantastic day at the Deva Roman Experience and Museum. The children dressed up as Romans and walked the streets of Chester. They learnt so much about life as a Roman before having their own battle outside the amphitheatre.
We had a brilliant time celebrating this year’s World Book Day – the children enjoyed a visit from the author Curtis Jobling and participating in WigLe dance workshops, whilst dressed in their amazing costumes, to represent various class novels which are read across school.
As a school we celebrated Safer Internet Day by coming into school wearing orange and blue clothes. This matched the colours of the logo and the children completed activities linked to keeping safe and talking about issues and exploring being online. The children also participated in a whole school assembly to raise awareness.
Our wonderful choir performed at the AO Arena in Manchester as part of the Young Voices event. The children showed great ambition and talent when performing in front of a huge crowd. We are very proud of the children’s performance.
The children thoroughly enjoyed debating the chosen motion, around the timings of the primary school day, which was selected by our School Ambassadors. Pupils were given roles which reflected The House of Commons such as ‘The Speaker’ and ‘Proposers/Opposers’.
Our amazing choir performed at The Edge, Arena in Wigan on Tuesday. The children performed their solo song, in front of hundreds of people and did so with so much passion and confidence. Well done choir! Click the link below to watch their fantastic performance.

The whole school had a treat today and were able to watch ‘Aladdin Live’. The children had a brilliant time and are very grateful to ‘Golborne Charities’ as this was funded by them. This charity do a lot of fundraising for our families in the community.
Year 5 and Year 6 have experienced a World War Two workshop with Angela and Frank to enhance their History learning. They have been immersed in their Wider Curriculum theme of ‘Britain at War’ and learnt about the home front, air raids and the military.
Reception visited Delamere Forest and completed different activities. The children explored where to make a habitat, how to find mini beasts and created a collage of a mini beast of their choice. After that, the children went on an adventure to find a Superworm.
The children in reception received a visit from the dentist. The children immersed themselves in asking Dentist Dan lots of questions about how they can keep their teeth healthy and what it is like to be a dentist.
Year 6 have had a visit from Greater Manchester Fire Service to inform them how to enjoy both Halloween and Bonfire Night safely.
The children had an amazing day at the Science and Industry Museum. They saw many exciting experiments linked to our Science Curriculum and experienced workshops on forces (Y3) and electricity (Y4). The children had a great time.

We have had an inspirational visit today from John Asiata who plays professional rugby for Leigh Centurions. He shared his journey and provided our children with ambition and resilience for their futures.
Children in Year 5 enjoyed a trip to Liverpool World Museum to enhance their learning around The Ancient Egyptians. They loved exploring the artefacts and the gruesome ‘Meet the Mummy’ workshop!
The children in Year 6 enjoyed their activity week and completed many actives such as den building, fire lighting and roasting marshmallows at Tread UK, scoring brilliant strikes when bowling and loved riding roller-coasters at Alton Towers.
Key Stage 1 had a brilliant day at Blackpool. The children showed resilience when going up the famous landmark, the Blackpool tower and were really brave when standing on the glass looking at the geographical features. They really enjoyed exploring the different animals and creatures in the Sea Life Centre. The children liked looking at the animal’s habitats and exploring how the different creatures felt such as starfish.
Pupils, in LKS2, enjoyed an informative workshop led by a NatWest volunteer which taught them the importance of having ‘money sense’ as they grow older as well as the difference between ‘wants’ and ‘needs’.
Lower Key Stage 2 had a brilliant time on their trip to Delamere Forest, linked to their theme Pirates. They enjoyed den building, orienteering with blindfolds, making shelters, tree bark rubbing and exploring the natural surroundings for survival resources.
The whole school came dressed in white, blue and red to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. The children made a crown each and decorated their classrooms to fully engage with the celebrations. The children enjoyed learning about the Queen and her life and loved having a Jubilee picnic.
Our Reception pupils visited Kenyon Hall Farm where they learnt about where fruit and vegetables come from; planted some of their own peas and beans and even had a ride on a tractor!
Children in Early Years and Reception experienced an exciting visit from local author Sam Shepherd – they enjoyed listening to Sam’s latest story: The Great Bone Robbery – Dogchester PD.
Our School Ambassadors had a great time visiting the Mayor of Wigan at the council chamber. They experienced democratic voting with some difficult decisions. Our School Ambassadors also experienced the Mayoral Office and enjoyed afternoon tea in the parlour!
The children had a great trip today linked to our theme, Spring Surprises. They explored the outdoors, built dens, made fires and searched for different animals in the open.The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the outdoors and learnt some great skills.
The children in Key Stage 2 had a great time exploring artefacts from the Viking era. Many children made their oath to raid with Olaf the Viking whilst he told us tales from the past. The children practised battle take tactics and learnt what it was like for Vikings when they invaded Britain.
The children in Key Stage 2 had a fantastic time exploring the habitats of insects and birds and how they have adapted to their environment to survive. The children enjoyed getting up close and personal with different mini-beasts.
To celebrate World Poetry Day, this week, we had a visit from the poet, Matt Goodfellow. The children experienced Matt reading aloud and performing his poetry and during their class workshops, they were taught how to show the power of their voice and cultural heritage through poetry.
On World Book Day the children had a brilliant day celebrating in school and completed many exciting book-based activities. The children enjoyed a whole school assembly linked to World Book Day. They discussed the importance of reading and how much they love this. They took part in a challenge to guess the book their teacher read when they were younger.
The children came to school as their favourite character and loved creating their own book cover linked to this. In addition, the children created a ‘Book in a Box’ which they created at home with support from their parents/carers.
The children, in Upper Key Stage 2, visited Golborne Library to meet children’s author Alex Winstanley and his colleagues from Happy Smiles Training CIC. This experience gave pupils the unique experience of understanding differences through the first-hand experience of Inclusion Champions. The session helped pupils to gain a better understanding of the different types of disability, whilst supporting them to develop a positive attitude towards disability.
The children in Year 4/3 and Year 4 had a wonderful time at Golborne Library this week for #NationalStorytellingWeek. The children listened to some amazing adventure narratives from the fantastic author Dan Worsley.
Pupils across school enjoyed getting into the festive spirit with Panto Live!
Our pupils had a special visit from, the Mayor of Wigan Borough, to award our School Ambassadors with an award recognising the school’s efforts in supporting everyone’s well-being. Pupils participated in question and answer sessions with the Mayor which developed and deepened pupils’ understanding of the fundamental British values of democracy and the rule of law.
Our Year 6 pupils were given the opportunity to be take part in a democratic process to elect representatives for UK Youth Parliament and have their voice heard.
To enhance our English curriculum, pupils across school took part in workshops with the poet, Andy Tooze, to learn more about the joy and creativity of poetry.
As part of their History curriculum learning, pupils in Upper Key Stage Two took part in workshops, with Dr Diane Davies, a real Maya archaeologist, to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the Maya civilisation.
As part of their Geography learning, our Lower Key Stage Two pupils participated in a ‘Natural Disasters’ themed workshop to deepen their knowledge of volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis.
